Safe Home Programs

There are 15 Safe Home programs that operate on a 24 hour bases throughout British Columbia and the Yukon. Safe Home programs are community based, well established, and developed networks of private homes that shelter women and their children. Safe Home Operators are volunteers of the program and receive training from the Safe Home Coordinator. They are required to provide meals, clean and safe sleeping accommodations, and supportive nonjudgmental environments. These placements are typically short stay placements but can be longer if required. Safe homes may also be self contained apartments that would be appropriate for low risk women and their children requiring longer stays.

Some of the services that safe homes may provide include:

  • Shelter
  • Transportation
  • Support Services
  • Information
  • Court accompaniments

Safe Home programs also provide outreach services in small rural communities that are often geographically far apart. Many women who access Save Homes are not in need of shelter but do require other services provided by Safe Homes programs, such as:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Ongoing support
  • Safety planning
  • Court accompaniment

Safe Homes programs have been running in British Columbia and the Yukon for well over a decade and are successfully meeting the needs of rural women and their children. For more information or to find out how you can get involved please contact your local Safe Homes Program or the BC/Yukon Society of Transition Houses.
